In the first edition, we explored the power of accessibility as a source of inspiration for innovation in the performing arts. This time, we focus on digital tools, both for creators and users. How can you use digital tools to experience culture with all your senses?
With this study afternoon, we aim to stimulate, challenge, and inform the broad Flemish cultural and social sector about more inclusive performing arts.
14:00-14:30 | Keynote 1 | Stijn Van Opstal (Toneelhuis), Serge Vlerick and Carolien Doggen (KU Leuven)
They worked intensively from Toneelhuis on the performance [meeuw]. In this performance, a mixed cast of deaf and hearing actors brings the beautiful theater classic by Chekhov to life, using Flemish Sign Language (VGT) as a starting point. For months, there has been intensive work on translating and rehearsing this repertoire text in Flemish Sign Language. Stijn, Serge, and Carolien are happy to provide insight into this special process.
14:30-15:00 | Keynote 2 | Giusy Caruso van CREATIE onderzoeksgroep van het Koninklijke Conservatorium Antwerpen
She explains her project Encounters. Encounters explores the contemporary music performance scene as a space for social interaction through digital tools that can improve accessibility for individuals with sensory impairments. Read more.
15:00-15:30 | Keynote 3 | Roel Van Gils (Eleven Ways)
Roel is an Accessibility Specialist and founder of Eleven Ways, a consultancy that provides digital accessibility services to government organizations, product teams, and digital agencies. He explains the use of AI in accessibility offerings. His focus is on AI for personalized access, not as a replacement for existing live initiatives but complementary to the professional offerings.
