Hüma Utku (TR)

Hailing from Istanbul, the composer and sound artist Hüma Utku delves into the possibility of how raw sonic textures, electronic experimentation and acoustic composition can be used as means to conduct artistic introspection, sonic expression and conceptual exploration. She fuses field recordings, analog synthesisers and atmospheric ambience into harsh ritualistic rhythms.

Combining her self-taught practice of music with her higher education in psychology; Utku's work as a whole draws inspiration from various layers of human condition and the complementary nature of dualities. She primarily engages with musical composition, sound for visuals, performance and installations.

Her new album, 'Dracones’, set to release in April 2025, references the medieval latin term ''Hic sunt dracones'' (Here be dragons) in its title, marking the unexplored, dangerous places on world maps, expressing the fear of chaos, the unexpected and the unknown. This new work is a sonic journal of an expedition into uncharted territory, one which occupies self and domesticity. Dracones explores the themes of familial demonology, metamorphosis and homecoming as well as euphoria, alienation and consumption.

Musically, Dracones traverses a wide array of sonic tools whereby industrial sounds are embedded with certain psychological angles – a deeply visual journey through inner and outer worlds, a space where symbolic evocation is supreme and passive listening is not an option.
