In het boek ‘Illness as Metaphor’ onderzoekt Susan Sontag hoe taal onze kijk op ziekte beïnvloedt. Ze ontdekte dat het niet de ziekte zelf is die centraal staat, maar de metaforen die we gebruiken. Deze beelden kunnen onze denkwijze vervormen en zelfs schadelijk zijn. Denk aan termen als "de strijd tegen kanker" of “de oorlog tegen corona”, “de verplegers aan de frontlinie”.

Het gerenommeerde Ierse theatergezelschap Dead Centre brengt dit idee naar het theater, samen met zes mensen (niet-professionele performers) die leven met een chronische ziekte. Maar is theater niet juist een plek vol metaforen? Als de wereld een podium is, hoe kan theater dan de realiteit tonen? Misschien kan theater, door te luisteren naar echte verhalen, een plek worden waar we zonder metaforen kunnen leven en sterven.  

Want uiteindelijk kun je op het podium niet doen alsof je lichaam er niet is.

Deze voorstelling maakt deel uit van ‘Women and Children First’.
