What if care, romance, and desire come together?

In 'O amor natural', choreographer Andrew Graham explores the complexity of touch in human relationships where care, romance, and desire come together. For people with disabilities, touch is often linked to medical care, with other needs frequently ignored.

The concept of consent raises many questions. How do we know what we do and do not want? And how do we communicate this? On what basis can we consent to something we do not yet know? Graham delves into the depth of connection and consent, moving beyond a simple yes or no. Consent is explored in all its non-verbal richness. Whispers, body temperature, breathing, gaze, and speed of movement weave a web of intimacy.

Graham describes 'O amor natural' as "a choreography of non-verbal haikus, where touch is the key to exploring trust between bodies, like the tango that connects two hearts." It invites a deeper understanding of human connection.

Sublime horror reflecting on the insane social order

In 'MadDoG,' dancer and choreographer Lydia McGlinchey pays homage to the aesthetics of the knot, Gothic, horror, and heavy metal. Inspired by centuries-old lace techniques, she transforms the theater into an impressive artwork where the scenography forms the core, like a 'knot' connecting various elements and issues.

'MadDoG' does not label darkness as evil but rather superficiality and challenges us to think further. The title of the performance refers to the madness of contemporary images of mass murders, advertisements from electronics stores, and photos of photoshopped women on yachts. High and low culture are intertwined. In this experience of closely connected disturbing contradictions, McGlinchey sees knotting as a relevant aesthetic concern. In 'MadDoG,' the knot symbolizes the impossibility of purity.

Three performers and a musician take center stage, combining spoken word, dance, and music.

Impetuous dance journey through a body of work

Mette Ingvartsen, resident artist at VIERNULVIER, has been collaborating with dancer Manon Santkin for 20 years. Especially for her, Ingvartsen wrote the solo 'RUSH,' a tribute to their long, intense collaboration and to performance itself.

Manon Santkin presents a retelling of previous performances she created with Ingvartsen. In a tumultuous 'rush,' highlights are brought back to life, and new forms emerge. Within the framework of a larger body of work, Santkin tells her own story, and her body undergoes a chameleon-like transformation. A tidal wave of energy emerges, with the joy of performing radiating from it.

Mixing personal history with Irish mythology

Part fiction, part biographical, all elements are overlapping, and it will become difficult to determine what's myth and what's reality.

It goes back to a time when families worked in the abattoirs of Belfast. Pigs in the garden of New lodge.

There's something in the meat of me, bloodline, there is a pink fleshy vulnerability to me, to dancing, there is a violence in me.

This new show will follow the story of Oona’s Great Great Grandfather Specky Clark and his arrival in Belfast.

For this piece which will be unfolding in a series of theatrical images, Oona Doherty will collaborate with many faithful and new partners. The production features music from Irish band Lankum, Gavino Murgia and David Holmes & Raven Violet. Maxime Jerry Fraisse is sound designer, Irish playwright Enda Walsh is dramaturg, Sabine Dargent is set designer, Darius Dolatyari-Dolatdoust is costume designer and long-time collaborator John Gunning is lighting designer. The piece will be performed by an international cast of 9 dancers.

Dancing to the core of Vivaldi's masterpiece 'The Four Seasons'

For this dance creation, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Radouan Mriziga drew inspiration from Antonio Vivaldi's masterpiece 'The Four Seasons,' performed by violinist Amandine Beyer and her ensemble Gli Incogniti. This iconic piece, known as a classical hit and tribute to nature, forms the basis of their choreography.

De Keersmaeker and Mriziga share a passion for natural observation, geometry, and abstraction. They express concerns about our ever-changing relationship with nature. Patterns, structures, and natural elements inspire the choreography. Reflecting on the seasons underscores the urgency of the climate crisis. Can we still speak of four seasons today? Vivaldi composed the work exactly three hundred years ago, which also prompts us to reflect on geopolitical dynamics and knowledge dissemination.

In 'Il Cimento dell'Armonia e dell'Inventione,' various threads are woven into a unique choreographic language, which harks back to the core and structure of 'The Four Seasons.' The performance also explores the contemplative aspect of this composition and the familiarity of both the music and nature.

What would the world look like if you could choose your own weapon? 'Zones of Resplendence' explores forms of manifestation for a potential feminized army. Carolina Mendonça and Lara Ferrari investigate whether you can fight a war with vulnerability, expanding the perspective on violence. By using the body in different ways, they prepare themselves for a possible confrontation. Will this sci-fi dance performance give rise to a new kind of army?

Drag, poetry, and theatrical pop music merge into a dream world

Theatre maker and performer Simon Baetens was a co-founder of the Ghent drag collective House Of Lux. With 'I'm Not Done,' he presents an intense, playful performance about self-projection, loneliness, and being on the road. For the first time, his drag alter ego 'Electra' leaves the club and appears on stage.

Electra takes the audience on a musical journey through transformative virtual and emotional landscapes. Through a combination of drag, music, video, and text, a dream-like world is created where the boundaries between technology and reality are no longer distinguishable.

'I'm Not Done' is a performance like a doomscroll, where pop music guides you through the labyrinth of the internet. It pays homage to the shameless theatricality of pop concerts and the poetry of song lyrics. Can exuberance and depth go hand in hand?

“I have always liked to pretend my body isn’t there.” - Susan Sontag

In her 1978 book Illness as Metaphor, Susan Sontag sets out to diagnose the problem with the way we think about illness. Her discovery was not to focus on sickness itself, but the language surrounding disease - language that can, in her view, quite literally kill.

Working with six participants living with long-term illness, Dead Centre adapt this groundbreaking text for the theatre, which is itself a metaphoric space. So, if all the world’s a stage, how can theatre deal with reality?

Perhaps, through inviting in some real people, theatre can be re-invented as a place where we might live, and die, without metaphor.

After all, the one thing you can’t do on stage is pretend your body isn’t there.

Vrouwenstemmen vechten terug tegen het patriarchaat

From ancient Greece to today: the female voice is often labeled as unnecessary or, more bluntly, annoying noise. Choreographer Jan Martens amplifies a different voice. With 'Voice Noise,' he gives innovative, unknown, or forgotten female musicians from the past hundred years of music history a stage. From the delicate Broadway soprano Ruby Elzy to Inuk throat singer Tanya Tagaq.

'Voice Noise' is inspired by Anne Carson's 1995 essay 'The Gender of Sound,' in which the American poet reveals how patriarchal culture attempts to silence women by associating their voices with monstrosity, disorder, and death. Six dancers confront recordings in which the human voice is heard in various forms: humming, soothing, screaming, whispering, or singing. Along the way, they discover their own voices.

A hopeful warning for the future

The ancient Greeks saw an art in predicting and recognizing omens such as the flight of birds, the position of trees, the wandering of bees. They called this Mantikê tékhnê. Just like back then, Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe's performance 'Mantike Bloom Boom' seeks the signs necessary for restoration and urgent renewal of our thinking about the world.

'Mantike Bloom Boom' starts from the electrically charged atmosphere of an abandoned landscape. The moment when everything seems to be going to ruin - Boom! - and suddenly light appears on the horizon - Bloom! Like the prelude to a storm, when the cows gather under a tree, the sky darkens, and the first breeze picks up. What can a person still undertake in such a landscape?

Like a whirlwind, actress Marjan De Schutter storms onto the stage in various forms. There is only one last link between dying bees and our fate. 'Mantike Bloom Boom' is a hopeful warning with predictions and vivid explosions. The end time is narrowly avoided.

    Still Lives
Capturing an iconic tableau vivant with ropes
    23.05

Capturing an iconic tableau vivant with ropes

Still Lives is a performance-installation series that captures (with ropes) significant moments or movement in relation to specific cultural contexts. Each edition of Still Lives is a durational, site-responsive and context-specific process of binding cultural objects in their place. This allows new conversations to emerge and unveils narratives about local history, political tensions, social connections and personal attachments

Looking to the renown Zesdaagse Vlaanderen-Gent that has been held annually since 1922, Luke George (Melbourne) and Daniel Kok (Singapore/Berlin) will tie up and suspend two Belgian cyclists in the style of rope bondage. The goal of this 2-hour performance is to have the cyclists and their bicycles suspended in the air as if they are in the middle of a race, tilting to one side as they round the tight curve of the velodrome track. The artists will also collaborate with two local sound artists; percussionists and/or electronic sound artists who are invited to create live compositions by working with bicycles as instruments.

The performance will take place in Ghent’s unique Minard theatre that has classical theatre seating on one side, and is a contemporary "black box" on the other. Audience members may choose to sit and move freely around the performance area, and to view the performance from either side. Meanwhile, a video installation featuring short documentary videos about our 2 cyclists is set up in the foyer of the theatre so that the audience can appreciate the personal stories and backgrounds of our subjects.

This iteration of Still Lives for Ghent, is characterised by duality - 2 persons in a race, art and sports, rigger and model, performers and spectators, language and culture, past and present. We want to highlight how even competition can be about collaboration, mutual understanding and communality. What will become apparent to the audience is that the performance is ultimately about the social and cultural life of Ghent, and how Belgians identify as a community.

Opera met veel zand en klimaatzorgen

Using several tons of sand to transform each venue into a lively beach, sunbathing characters offer up a range of seductive harmonies and melodic stories that glide between the mundane, the sinister, and the surreal. From the sprawling narrative of their lives emerges a piercing exploration of climate change, shining light on the complex relationship between people and our planet. The piece is brought to life by 13 vocalists who are surrounded by local community members acting as fellow beach-goers in each city.

With a bird’s-eye view of the performance from a mezzanine gallery above the stage, audiences look down on the assembled characters who appear as a typical group of vacationers of varying ages, from different walks of life, attired in colourful bathing suits and sunbathing under the full glare of the sun over a mosaic of towels. Surveying this fleshy tableau vivant from their sun-like vantage point, audiences observe the frailty of the human condition. As the libretto unfolds we are introduced to each individual in turn, through sung performances (performed whilst lying down) that reveal private preoccupations, ranging from trivial concerns about sunburn and plans for future vacations to nagging fears of environmental catastrophe, which surface as though from the depths of the characters’ troubled consciousness. Frivolous micro-stories on this crowded beach give way to broader, more serious topics and grow into a global symphony, a universal human choir addressing issues of planetary scale; tired bodies offering a metonym for a tired planet.

Staged on an indoor beach, composed through light, architecture and music, this durational work unfolds on a loop over several hours. The libretto of the piece is set as a mosaic of stories, inner monologues, dreams and thoughts, sung in solos and as a chorus by the beachgoers. This ‘soup’ of stories might sound mundane and carefree; however, in this liturgical, poppy, and synthetic ocean of songs one can feel an impending threat. The picture of enjoyable holidays belies the consequences of this inertia – planetary resources being extracted as if sipping a fizzy Piña Colada.

An exercise in looking through frames

Imagine a burglar who steals only the frames of the artworks in your home, but not the works themselves. How would you then look at the art? This is a question the French philosopher Jacques Derrida once posed. In 'Frames', Alexander Vantournhout turns the question around. If you frame something, does it then become a work of art?

'Frames' explores that one element of theater that is usually left untouched: the frame through which the audience looks. What happens if you detach that frame from the theater and place it outdoors? 'Frames' invites the audience to take a walk and explore the boundaries of theater and perspective.

The dance company Not Standing literally takes you out of the theater and directs your gaze not only to the four performers hanging and climbing in those frames, but also to everything around them: the horizon, the sky, and the other viewers.

THE OCEAN TO RELEASE 10TH STUDIO ALBUM "HOLOCENE" ON MAY 19

Following a world tour, The Ocean returns with Holocene, an album that concludes their paleontology-inspired series and takes a step towards electronic music while maintaining their signature heavy sound. The album opens with the synth-driven track "Preboreal," setting the tone for the entire record. Holocene addresses the current epoch in which humanity has drastically shaped the planet.

For the first time, the album is entirely based on synth ideas from Peter Voigtmann, leading to a fresh, exciting musical direction. The mix, handled by Karl Daniel Lidén, offers a clear, powerful sound that balances electronics with orchestral grandeur.

Holocene delves into themes like alienation, the quest for eternal youth, and social critique, inspired by Guy Debord. The album wraps up the series, tackling modern issues like fear and the breakdown of values. After 20 years, The Ocean continues to be a powerful force in the music world.

    29.01

Corruption. Paranoia. Blackmail. A circle of violence and retaliation. A tangle of deceit and fear. The inescapable tentacles of the underworld. Bloody debts settled. Traitors betrayed. Revenge calls, when the law isn't enough....

Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats are one of the most eccentric bands of the post-Sabbathian realm. With a sound variously borrowed from classic doom, psychedelia, garage rock, underground, and occult heavyness. Proof of this is their latest record NELL' ORA BLU. A particularly cinematic record, inspired in part by the dark magic of the Italian Giallo film movement, but also drawn directly from Kevin Starrs' own grimy and fearless imagination. An entirely unique listening experience that thumps and screams with gruesome intentions.

  • Whispering Sons

    20.02

Belgian five-piece Whispering Sons brings a dark and unique blend of experimental and frenetic post-punk. The propulsive instrumentation combined with Fenne Kuppens’ deep vocal delivery amounts to a constant sense of unease that’s been inherent in their music since the beginnings. With their energetic and captivating performance, the band has firmly cemented themselves as a must-see live act.

Over the last years, the band has been slowly but surely redrawing their own boundaries and going beyond them. Where their debut album ‘Image’ (2018) was theatrical and widescreen, their following record ‘Several Others’ (2021) focused more on their greatest strength: sheer, unpretentious intensity. After the release of ‘Several Others’ the band started working on a new album over a period of two years. This third full-length album titled ‘The Great Calm’ might surprise long-standing Whispering Sons followers. It’s less dark than ‘Several Others’ and less grand than ‘Image’. Yet that typical Whispering Sons identity is still inherent in every song, as the band never strays far from their raw energy and emotion. This new album might be more uplifting and playful, but that ominous undertone is still lurking.

“The record is more hopeful, there’s more beauty in it. Our last album was very dark and always very destructive. I guess this one is still a bit destructive, but there's hope in that destruction.”
    - Fenne Kuppens, Whispering Sons

In THE ARENA, we make space for nuanced and in-depth conversations and also let the audience have their say.

International criminal lawyer Walter Van Steenbrugge and entrepreneur Yasmien Naciri take us into the fascinating world of justice. They invite two guests each time. Together, they share insights, offer perspectives and reflect on current affairs.

The discussions are moderated by Lisbeth Imbo, and the audience is invited to judge.

    Welcome to THE ARENA!

"Uitgelezen," the book program by Behoud de Begeerte and VIERNULVIER, is back for a new season. Host Ruth Joos is joined by familiar faces such as Ibe Rossel, Melissa Giardina, and Angelo Tijssens, alongside new panel members, all united by a shared love for books.

The beloved segments remain: three carefully selected books on the table, followed by a personal recommendation from each guest. Each evening is enhanced with a musical interlude, and we also welcome a "Vooruitlezer" (Pre-Reader), an author who gives a preview of an unpublished work. All of these elements make Uitgelezen a true delight for readers and book lovers, with a focus on fiction, non-fiction, and other genres. During the lottery, you also have the chance to win one of the discussed titles.

Have you checked out the website uitgelezen.live? There, you can find more information about upcoming editions of the program, along with audio recordings of the book discussions and excerpts from the ‘Vooruitlezers’.
